Level 3 Geography


AS 90701 – Analyse natural processes in the context of a geographic environment

Credits – 4

This paper will consist of three questions.  Students must answer the first question and can then choose to answer either question two or question three.  Question one will include annotated diagrams, while question two and three require an illustrated essay format.


AS 90702 – Analyse a cultural process

Credits – 4

This paper will consist of three questions.  Students must answer the first question and can then choose to answer either question two or question three.  Each question consists of two parts. The first part will require students to answer the question based on either their New Zealand or their overseas setting. In the second part they will be required to compare this to their other setting. For Achievement with Merit and Achievement with Excellence, both your New Zealand and overseas settings must be used to answer the questions


AS 90704 – Apply skills and ideas with direction in a geographic context

Credits – 4

The paper will consist of three sections. The first section will focus on Visuals and Topographical Mapping skills, and candidates will be required to interpret topographic maps, satellite images and photographs. The second section will focus on Graphing skills, and students will be required to construct and/or interpret graph(s). In the third section, students will be required to apply the Maori concept of Kaitiakitanga in a specific geographic context.

 

AS 90705 – Carry out and present geographic research with consultation

Credits – 3

This achievement standard involves planning, carrying out and presenting geographic research with consultation, selecting and discussing geographic ideas relevant to the research topic and/or findings, and evaluating the research process.

AS 90706 – Analyse a contemporary geographic issue and evaluate courses of action

Credits – 3

This achievement standard involves analysing the geographic nature of, and viewpoints relating to, a contemporary issue.  It also includes evaluating courses of action and making a recommendation.

AS 90337 – Analyse a geographic topic at a global scale

Credits – 3

This achievement standard involves analysing the pattern(s) and process(es) within a geographic topic at a global scale, and how they are significant for people.

Pre-requisites – none, though students looking to study geography at Level Three will be expected to have studied at least one year of the subject at Level One or Level Two.

Course cost – approx $250 for field trip to Rotorua
