Course Outline

Students will generate, analyse, clarify and regenerate ideas based on a self selected brief using the Auckland Waterfront as a starting point.

All Year 13 students will participate in a field trip to the Waterfront in Week 2 of Term 1. The objective of the trip is to focus on approaches to drawing as the central means to generate, analyse, clarify and regenerate ideas. Students from different contexts (e.g. Sculpture, Painting, Design, Photography) will work together to explore drawing through a variety of means within the set environment. These drawing techniques will be recorded and extended upon back in the classroom through the internal assessment work. These assessments will provide students with skills, methods and design experience and will have a component built in where students will work on the selection and determination of their own brief that has developed out of students’ own visual research when on the field trip to the Waterfront. The brief will then provide the framework for the external folio work that will continue for the rest of the year. The use of the visual diary to collect, research and record will be central to the course. Internal assessment work and all documentation of ideas and decision making will be recorded in the visual diary.

EOTC

One day field trip to the Auckland Waterfront at the beginning of Term 1.

Differentiation and Extension Opportunities

Students will have the opportunity to select from a range of resources to allow them to explore something that is of personal interest within the parameters of the theme. They will have the opportunity to select from a range of model artists / designers from different fields to extend their understanding of art making materials, techniques, processes and procedures. They will have the opportunity to experiment with these different approaches during the field trip, grouping up with students from other art areas to encourage shared knowledge. Resource booklets on drawing approaches for each Visual Arts field will be provided. Students can self extend and work at different levels by further researching artist / designer models, exploring new techniques and by going deeper and/or broader into the thematic study. Students have the capacity to find their own level by following the class basic plan or extend upon it, to pace themselves and to negotiate suitable outcomes for their own work with their teacher. They would be scaffolding their learning opportunities presented to them through a range of methodology. Students will discuss their work with classmates, have the opportunity to present and communicate ideas and evaluate their own progress and approaches to problem-solving.

Assessment Requirements

Students will be required to submit the following Achievement Standards –

·         AS90515 -  Research and analyse approaches within established design practice - 4 credits, Internal

·         AS90516 -  Investigate and use ideas and methods in the context of a drawing study in design – 6 credits,  Internal

·          AS90517 - Produce original work within design to show extensive knowledge of art making methods and ideas - 14 credits, External.

Work for internal assessments will take place in the visual diary and may form the foundations of a component of the external folio. These are assessed within the school and externally moderated. The external folio consists of three panels of A1 folio board on which student responses to a selected brief of their own determining it’s presented. It is externally marked in Wellington in November and December of 2010.

Achievement Objectives – Level 8

Students will:

Understanding the visual arts in context

  • Use research and analysis to investigate contexts, meanings, intentions, and technological influences related to the making and valuing of art works.
  • Research and analyse contexts relevant to their intentions and to the expression of meanings in their own work.

Developing practical knowledge

  • Apply understanding from broad and deep research into the characteristics and constraints of materials, techniques, technologies, and established conventions in a selected field.
  • Extend and refine skills in a selected field, using appropriate processes and procedures.

Developing ideas

  • Generate, analyse, clarify, and regenerate options in response to selected questions or a proposal in a chosen field.
  • Use a systematic approach, selectively informed by recent and established practice, to develop ideas in a body of work.

Communicating and interpreting

  • Research and analyse selected approaches and theories related to visual arts practice.
  • Critically reflect on, respond to, and evaluate art works.

Materials

Students are required to replenish their supply of art materials needed for design from the art kit at the beginning of the year. The stationery shop carries a range of design materials for drawing. All students are required to have a visual diary in which to record and document ideas. Students will purchase colour printing by depositing funds into their own account as needed. It is recommended that students have a small digital camera of at least 9 megapixels on which to record and document ideas and subject matter. Design students need to have a 4 GB USB to store their design works.
