2.1 Sculpture
Research information, methods and ideas in the context of a drawing study in sculpture
.
6 Credits
This
A/S involves researching information and ideas relating to art &
artworks and applying them in context of a drawing study in sculpture.
It also involves the use of drawing materials, tools, techniques and
processes appropriate to purpose in that context.
'Stage Set'
Aim
To produce a body of work that contains the following –
- Research on the types of theatre stages.
- Experiments with drawing various stages.
- A selected scene from the film ‘Romeo and Juliet’.
- An explanation of why this scene has been selected.
- The identification of the key moment within this scene, a freezing of the action at this point.
- An identification of the all the elements that make up this moment.
- The designing of a stage set that would present these elements.
- The making of this stage set in cardboard with figures as cut-outs.
- Lighting and photographing this set.
- Presenting this photograph with explanatory notes.
Method
This unit will involve –
- Research into stage set with notes, drawings & photocopies of historical sets.
- Perspective drawing of stage sets.
- Viewing the movie ‘Romeo & Juliet’.
- Studying the movements & structures within a selected scene in this movie.
- Making a map of this scene to show how the sequence of action unfolds.
- The selection of a moment within this sequence that in some way explains the whole movie.
- Selecting
a stage set that would present this moment, pruning the requirements
within this moment down to its essentials – what references are needed
to explain the action/drama of this moment.
- Making the selected set out of cardboard.
- Photographing this cardboard set.
- Presenting this photograph and analysing the success of the set in staging the selected moment from ‘Romeo & Juliet’
Due
8 A3 pages due Monday 29th
March, start of week 10.
All students must submit on this date, non submission will be marked as NA.
Requirements – 8 A3 pages
·
Task #1 – Stage Set Research – 2 A3 pages
Research
– drawings & notes on historical & cultural settings for presenting performances. (1 A3 page)
Drawing sets in 3D
– experiments in presenting the ‘space’ within a set using perspective drawing. (1 A3 page)
·
Task #2 – ‘Romeo & Juliet – 3 A3 pages
Watching the movie
– select 3 key scenes
and document these scenes in notes and scribble sketches. Explain the importance of these scenes in the movie mentioning
the characters, action and environment involved. (1 A3 page)
Selecting your scene
– from these 3 scenes choose 1. Within this scene
select the most important moment. Freeze the action at this moment and
make a note of the following –
( 2 A3 pages, one planning page & one final page)
*
The 3D space in which this scene happens, use scribble drawings with
notes & arrows to show how the actors and the action move through
this space.
* A plan view from above of this moment, with the relationship of characters and objects within the ‘space’ of the scene.
*
Using perspective drawing to draw up a view of the ‘space’ of this
scene. This drawing is to be a scribble sketch and is to have the
following -
-
Include the most important objects as block shapes, details could be
collaged on with textures from photocopies or drawn on in one section
- Figures as ‘stick’ shapes set in their poses in the space relative to other figures and objects.
-
Identify the light source using arrows and shadows.
-
Identify entry and exit points.
·
Task #3 – Redesigning the ‘moment’ – 2 A3 pages
Key objects & figures in this moment
– make a list of objects and characters that must
be in this frozen moment of this scene. These will determine the space
or set that you will design to present this scene or moment of this
scene.
Stage space
– try 3 different spaces to house or present your selected moment. (1 A3 page)
Selected space
– Choose one of these 3 and draw it using
perspective. Place your key objects and characters in this space –
objects as blocks and figures as stick figures in their poses. ( 1 A3
page)
Directors Information
– add light source and entry/exit indications with arrows & notes.
·
Task #4 – Making the set – 1 A3 page
Cardboard Model
– use card and glue gun to make the set.
Objects & Figures
– objects as block shapes, texture could be stuck
on with photocopies of buildings, trees, landscape or ?, figures as cut
out blobs with stands.
Photographs
– stages photographed with light source.
Analyses
– Stick in the photograph and comment on – ( 1 A3 page )
* How the ‘space’ of your set presents the action differently to the movie set.
* Comment on how this set would function, what would be the difficulties in building and using this set in a production.
* What is the most successful aspect of this set?
* What is the least successful aspect of this set?
